On July 1, 2025, the Oslo Center held a conference on “Rebuilding trust in the Age of Disinformation”. The Oslo Center, the event brought together political leaders, religious figures, academics, and youth advocates to explore strategies for combating the erosion of democratic values through misinformation. The #WordsMatter2025 conference took place at the Oslo Kongressenter Folkets Hus. It convened more than 200 delegates from different countries and backgrounds.
The conference convened renowned speakers who discussed the role of social media in spreading disinformation. Speakers include Sir Nick Clegg (former UK Deputy Prime Minister 2010-2015 and former President, Global Affairs at Meta 2018-2025), Kamzy Gunaratnam (Norwegian politician and advocate for democracy), Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis (Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth ), Helle Thorning-Schmidt (Former Prime Minister of Denmark and Co-Chair of Meta Oversight Board), HE Dr. Mohammad bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa (Secretary General of the Muslim World League), and many others (see the list here: https://oslocenter.no/wordsmatter/speakers/).

#WordsMatter 2025 discussions was centered on practical strategies to help counter disinformation and preserve democratic values. Speakers highlighted the role of social in propagating antisemitism, hate speech and called for greater cross-cultural collaboration to strengthen societies.
The gathering underscored our collective responsibility to challenge disinformation. Participants were reminded that everyone “content doesn’t come from an algorithm, the content comes from human beings”; hence, we should not always blame technology.
